Repurposing Your Garage: Don’t Forget the Floor

Garages tend to be forgotten spaces – a place to hold the stuff you no longer want inside your house, or a space to park your car. However, in a city like Nashville where space is at a premium, you might be curious about repurposing your garage into something more useful.

Of course, no one wants a cold, ugly concrete floor in their new space. But what can you do instead?

How to Repurpose a Garage Floor

Soft Flooring: Vinyl and Laminate Flooring, Could be the Way to Go

Knowing the general purpose and direction of your new room will determine what kind of floor you should install in your garage. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that unless you are planning on doing a full overhaul of the building, you’re going to have to deal with outdoor elements making their way into the room. You want a floor that can handle sudden temperature changes and invasive moisture.

With this in mind, you’ll be hard pressed to find something better than laminate or vinyl luxury plank flooring. This material is tough when dealing with extreme conditions and is one of the best materials when for handling  flooring’s number one killer: moisture. Additionally, laminate or vinyl plank flooring can be styled in a variety of ways, including to mimic traditional hardwood flooring.

Rubber Flooring and Cork Are Surprisingly Great Options Too

If you plan on turning your garage into a workout area, then your best bet is rubber or cork flooring. Beyond the fact that both options are incredibly eco-friendly, they will also feel soft and wonderful under your feet, relieving some of the stress on your ankles as you exercise. Both are very affordable – and if you’re concerned about it looking like a gym, or not as pretty as you hoped, don’t fear. Like most of the other flooring options available these days, both rubber flooring and cork flooring come in numerous styles. If you want something that looks like traditional hardwood flooring but is cheaper, better for the environment, and better for the room you’re designing, you’ll certainly be able to find a rubber or cork option to fit the bill.

What if I Want Traditional Hardwood Flooring?

But if you still want traditional hardwood flooring, get it! Just because there are better options in some categories does not mean that you should never put traditional hardwood flooring in your garage. People have been flooring with wood for ages, so if your new man cave just isn’t going to feel complete without an expertly finished oak hardwood floor installation, then put it in by all means. Just remember that it will need to be resurfaced and maintained more regularly. It will also cost a little more.

Renovating your garage is a good project for the whole family to work on and has the potential to transform a cold and creepy space into a warm and inviting one. Just make sure that your flooring choice is the best one for you.
